Credit Awareness Rises Among American Consumers

RoadFish.com men's lifestyle and finance magazine today issued their observations surrounding credit education and awareness rising amongst American consumers as they line up to take advantage of bank-sponsored credit-related events. RoadFish.com's take on this may be of use to consumers who are interested in gaining more insight as to how credit scores are computed, and what sorts of actions will affect their credit.

Susan Tompor of the Detroit Free Press recently reported that credit-related events were drawing crowds in Michigan, including Wells Fargo's current campaign that hands out free credit scores and reports to its customers and Michigan First Credit Union's bi-annual educational credit event that also distributes free credit scores and credit pointers. Tompor's article states that the best time to clean up a credit history is prior to requesting a loan, and she points out that the fact that so many consumers are showing interest in credit could be a sign of financial recovery. The article includes a quote from Michael Poulos, president and CEO of Michigan First Credit Union, as stating, "It's become much more public that credit scores matter."

RoadFish.com views the increased interest in credit as a positive sign, and encourages the continued quest for knowledge among consumers. RoadFish.com's Senior staff writer is quoted as saying, "I think it is absolutely wonderful that the response to recent bank-sponsored cred women's coats online it events has been so strong. Our nation as a whole has issues with debt, and the more people who understand the importance of credit—not just the effect that it has on one's finances, but what goes into computing the actual scores—the better. According to FICO, there are currently 50 million people in our nation with scores higher than 785. That is considered sterling credit. I am confident that with the recent hunger for credit knowledge, and the bank response of providing it, the number of people who fall into this category can climb over the next year."

Tompor's article stated that Michael Poulos spoke for two hours at an educational credit score seminar last week, where free credit scores and reports were also handed out. Poulos cited some credit facts during his speech that might have surprised some of the 160 attendees, such as the report revealing that the difference in the amount in interest a borrower with poor credit would pay versus a consumer with good credit on a five-year $25,000 car loan is a whopping $8,253.50. Speaker Poulos also emphasized that it is entirely possible to turn around a poor credit score by making timely payments on each and every account, limiting the accrual of more debt, and also through keeping credit lines open, not closing them. Open credit cards serve as available lines of credit, which looks good on a credit report—even if they're not being utilized.

ToTompor reported that in an interview with Poulos, he told her that lending has been gradually increasing over the past year, and that auto lending especially is back up because more people are working again. Poulos also stated that new mortgage business is on the rise as competition mounts over home-building in coveted suburban neighborhoods. He told Tompor, "Consumer borrowing is all about confidence—confidence that I'm going to have a job and pay this back."

Only Winners in Morgan Drexen Holiday Food Drive Challenge

Officials at the Orange County Rescue Mission say it's the largest donation yet this season – some 2,100 pounds of food to feed hungry families this Thanksgiving Week - that equates to more than 4,200 meals.
Morgan Drexen(http://morgandrexen.com) employees showed their compassionate and competitive spirit by collecting food and other critical household items during a two-week period, ending with plenty of time for Thanksgiving dinner.

The first week saw a steady stream of donations, but Morgan Drexen Director of Information Technology Jake Jacobsen wasn't satisfied. He proposed a competition among employees on all five floors of Morgan Drexen's Costa Mesa headquarters - the floor that collected the most items would be declared the winner. The only prize for the victorious floor: a sense of pride and satisfaction in collecting the most donations for a very worthy cause.
In the end, employees on the fourth floor, populated by the Client Services and Creditor Relations departments, came out on top. Jacobsen, who has previous ties to the Orange County Rescue Mission, is thrilled Morgan Drexen's 340-plus employees responded to his challenge.

"It started with the idea of having the IT department all pitch in some money and we could go shopping for some food to donate," explains Jacobsen. "Then I figured it might be fun to challenge another department to try to bring in more. By the end of the day we had challenged almost every department in the building. The winner of the challenge doesn't really matter, because in the end, all the food goes to help people in need during the holidays."
The piles of collected donations included stuffing, pasta, cereal, rice, canned vegetables, sweet potatoes, beans, clothing, blankets, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and countless other household items.
women's coats "We can't do what we do if it weren't for you guys," says Kristin Bruce of the Development Department for the Orange County Rescue Mission. "We wouldn't have any work to do. I think that we kind of get to be the vehicle that delivers it to the people that need it, but there wouldn't be anything to deliver if we didn't have friends, or relationships or a community that supported us like you guys did. [Our clients] are so grateful. Their lives are being changed because of you guys."

Jacobsen is well aware of the good work performed by the mission.

"While working for my previous employer, I spent quite a bit of time doing project work and providing IT support services to the Orange County Rescue Mission," says Jacobsen. "The most impressive thing I remember about OCRM was that they do it all without government funding. They are supported entirely through private and corporate donations."

The Orange County Rescue Mission provides food, housing, medical and support services to homeless men, women, children and families throughout Orange County, helping them to become self-sufficient. Mission officials say the recent economic downturn has resulted in a sharp decrease in donations, all while the need has simultaneously gone up.

Morgan Drexen is committed to community service. The company partners with nearly a dozen non-profit groups throughout the region and has raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity in 2012 alone. Headquartered in Costa Mesa, CA, Morgan Drexen provides automated software and support services to attorneys across the United States.

Persian cats: Bicolor

Persian cat: Bicolor

Past, present and future of Persian Bicolors

American owners always loved to bicolor, colored cats. In England, vice versa, it is cordial dislike to these colors, which become stronger probably
because they are dofficult in breeding, though this color make cats more beautiful and sight. You can seldom meet piebald animals on the exhibitions in
Russia, thye say that they are not in fashion, but it turns out that our owner don't know almost anything abou this color.

Gene of white Piebald Spotting is called gene of household, it is the most common among all spontaneous mutations, and is showed in many different forms,
concerning to limitation of colored pigment in definite colors. Some form of this gene appears in all varieties of domestic animals, but is
absence almost in all wild animals. Under the ruthless methods of natural selection, luxurious white marks would mean death. Known exception is zebra.
Her stripes serve as camouflage in habitat. Nevertheless, colorful white marks were appreciated and selected by selectionists for continuation of genus in
the breeding of domestic animals.

Past

Where did modern colors of bicolor and calico ( tortoiseshell on white) appear from? Today 's Persians are, first of all, progeny of longhaired cats,
imported to England and other parts of Europe during the middle - end 1800s from geographical regions countries Persia and Turkey of that time. Gene of
Piebald Spotting was widespread then, but often was masked by prepotent white color, which is especially well-known in longhaired cats of Turkey.

If to pay attention in the past, we will see that all longhaired cats were prised together on the exhibitions and iffers of breeds were based more on
colors, than on differs of type or the country of origin of given animals. Imagination of cats of american selectionists followed the leading at that time
English exhibition rules in this attitude, so that on the earliest american exhibitions, for example, all white cats were valued at one class, and it
didn't matter if their pedigree went back to Persia, Turkey or local cats from Man state (having occured in America with first sailors from Europe). This
practice almost lost the type of Turkish Angoras cats, who assimilated into the big breed, which became known to us as Persian.

Unfortunately, earlier herd-books of England and America wil not allow to follow ways of development of all colors in full. At the beginning of the
century bicolored Persians registered and showed and in England, and in the USA. But they were not popular, because there worked pedigree programs of
breeding one colored cats (Solids) in England, and active efforts were spent to avoid white spottiness. In 1904 in one artical, devoted to the review of
cat 's shows in the attitude of bicolored colors, were said that '...it is more better to put to sleep such many-colored indiviuals at once or to sell them
as domestic nurslings than to keep them as sires, spoiling purity, value, and reputation of colors.'

By the time of devision of longhaired breeds into Persians and half longhaired cats at the begiinning of 1900s there wasn't any need in different
indication of breed within the category of longhaired till the appearance of Himalayan Persins as breed in 1950s. Bicolors and Calico in British and
Americn herd-books rated as non-recognized colors and had a ban for the participation in shows. CFA was the first who attributed Bicolors to recognized
(accepted) for the registration. It was common practice of cat organizations in all breeds, that allowed the registration of cats, which was of pure
origin, but non-recognized color.

The exact period of time, when Bicolors and Calico were difficult to show, is difficult to find out, but in 1933 Evelyn Buckworth-Herne-Soame have written
in his impressions from the exhibition about Tortoiseshell on White cat: 'This is the most vivid and charming animal. It is a pity that there is no bigger
number of such...' At the same year first white-black individuals, which public liked, appeared on the shows and it was accepted to bring bicolored in any
other color.

However, after 1933 Bicolors and Calico were officially removed from the shows in the USA right up to 1955 when by the efforts of Dorothy Anderson Calico
was approved anew in CFA. Only in 1971 other bicolored colors were accepted. Herd-books show that these colors is saved in the genotype during these 22
years of oblivion, because the gene of white spottines often masked with white.

The decade fashion jackets online of 1980ies made a revolution in bicolored colors and in May of 1991 the article of Anthology of Persian cats was published, devoted to these
colors, which embraced many features and requorememts for these variation of Persians. At the first time cats of these colors got to the catalogues of
winners.

But 80ies brought not only the flash of Bicolors' popularity, but fixed extreme type, in which bicolored Presians became really amazing.

Fast increasing sccesses of bicolored cats made them popular and enough widespread. Since 1991 Bicolors and Kaliko were singled out into separate
exhibition classes and divided from Solids for breeding 'within themselves'.

Leading nurseries and ancestors of Persian breeding, specialized on the colors Bicolor became 'Anz' and 'Pajean', breeded first national winners and
hundreds Grand-Champions of CFA. Practically all modern lines of Persian Bicolors go back to these nurseries.

Future

Future of Bicolors, of course, is obvolute with the secret and consists of more number of questions than of answers.

CFA holds a discussion about separation of colors Tabby with white into separate divisions for the participation in the exhibitions. Probably,
orange-eyed, different-eyed and blue-eyed Vans will stand separately , if their number is enough.

Which changes can we expect in the attitude of the standard of Bicolors? Councillors of the breed Persian Bicolor and Calico of CFA voted down more
than once any changes of the standard, which remained practically the same, beginning since 1988. During the 80-ies some bicolored animals with
old-fashioned type or lack of white in the color gained titles of Grand-Champions, because this type was developed and fixed. Now this is sooner an
exception than a rule, because increase of animals level dictates the necessity of full correspondence to the standard. Incrbicolor3.jpgease of sale of
cats to the countries of European market maens the necessity to pay an attention of owners of CFA on standards of color in phelinological centers of other
countries.

Present

Comparison of Bicolors' standard CFA and other associations.

GCCF

Recently in GCCF (Great Britain) an addition to Persian standard in GCCF were published '...to refuse in the awarding the first place in the class of
kitten and awarding the title in Open Classes ( in CFA it is equivalent to the disqualification ) to the animals, having an upper part of nasal mirror
upper than lower eyelid.' There continue to storm a debates about this problem, and GCCF takes additons to the standard of Bicolors about
disqualification of animals with wrong proportions in the correspondence of colors. Defect of color is considered: " Plenty of white on the body
" Absence of white marks on the head
" As for GCCF standard right Tortoiseshell with White (equivalent CFA calico) and bicolored colors must not have less than 1/3 and not more ?
of white in the color. Face must be both colored and white, legs must be white , a little quantity of basic color is accepted. Some of quantity of
white on the tail part is allowed, but white tail part in full is a defect.
" Van according to GCCF standard is basically white except marks of basic color, situated on the head, ears and tail part. Ideally right colored
animal must not have little spots on the body and legs except three accepted.

This standard, of course, would fined that cats, who have more than half of white, but less than required for Harlequin. In 1989 CFA decided this
problem to envelope that luxurious cats in full, many of which take part in the exhibitions and reach the final today.

FIFE

Standard in FIFE defines three separate color variants:

" Bicolor must have at least ? , but not more than 2/3 of basic color of hair (white flame on the face and white small strap on the back part of body are
desired).
" Color Harlequin requirs for at least ?, but not more than ? of basic color
" Van requires for 1/6 of basic color (colors are for Tortoiseshell cats) and 5/6 of white. More precise definition of division of colors in color Van is
two colored patches on the face, separated by flame, and one spot, beginning on the buttock part and enveloping all tail part. Three little colored
patcheson the body and (or) on legs.

CFA

Standard CFA describes esthetis ideal without making experts become mathematicians. Judge is guided by the standard of color, whichdictates the quantity
of white as privileged minimum. Contrary to the widespread wrong opinion there is no there never was percent of white in the standard of CFA. Expert by
appraisal of the right of color is guided by 20 points, 10 points of which are added for colored and 10 points are for white marks. So, standard provides
the operation factors of appraisal to discretion of judge, who decides himself how colors are balanced for definite type of animal.

WCF

Standard of colors of bicolor, harlequin and van practically repeats the standard of FIFE for the exception of an addition about desirability of
presence of ended white ring on the neck and symmetric coloring of the face.

Peculiarities of pedigree work with color

Owner often solve the problem of perfection of type to the rejudice of the color 's quality. Especially strong this problem stands for Bicolors,
Harlequins and Vans. It is considered that to improve the color, it is necessary to limit the pedigree work with copulations 'within itself'
(i.e. bicolors with bicolors). But in this case it has to pay an attention on the dose of gene S. So, for Bicolors with not enough developed pegenes
it should choose partners - Harlequins, and for animals with single disseminations of white (what is non-accepted for Persians) the best pair will be
Bicolor with big quantity of white. At that white piebaldness of Van color is slightly isolated from other particolored colors. Cats with such allocation
of white spots are recommended to breed without using other white-piebald and colored variations to avoid appearance of colored spots in on-accepted places
(for example, on the back).

Though, gene S is considered to be prepotent, and Bicolors - heterozygotes along it, allocation of spots and correspondence of colors is regulated not only
by S allele, but groups of genes - modifiers. That 's why if is intended the copulation of Bicolor cat with onecolored cat, there are more chances to
recieve wittingly good correspondence of colors in kittens in that case if cat 's mother or father had qualitative bicolored color. It is necessary for
owners to pay attention on this by choosing of sires in the nursery.

Earlier it is considered that by many copulations of Bicolors between themselves accumulation of white color happens and color Bicolor gradually changes
into Harlequin. But to the contrary of this statesment nurseries, stably breeding bicolored animals without systematically top removal Harlequins and
one-colored individuals. Obviously, gene of white piebaldness is quite exposed to stabilization by planned selection.

Peculiarity of grooming

As Persians of any other color, Bicolors is neede in everyday and special exhibition grooming. Great second helping to their ration will serve sea algae
and betacarotine, making the eye color brighter and color of coat contraster. However, preparing of animals, having two or three colors in the color
(for calico) become difficult dy impossibility of using of colored shampoos. Also the standard of Bicolor requires for distinct differentiationof colors,
which in case of necessity is acheived with the help of trimming of white hairs, situated on the colored parts. As it is impossible to use colored
shampoos, medicinal shampoos, which improve the quality of hair, and balsams, containing sea algae will help. Directly on the show it is able to use
special fluffing schaums and sprays, making the hair brighter.

Shampoo Ingredients: What Really Works?

Copyright (c) 2010 Melissa Hill

We all want healthy, shiny, more manageable hair. The question is which magic ingredients in your shampoo or conditioner will deliver the results?

The hair care industry know you want more for your hair and each company works hard to convince you that their unique added ingredient is the only one to solve your problem.

So how can you sort hype from reality? Following are just a few home truths about shampoo ingredients that do pretty much nothing for your hair:

Hype: Proteins that feed your hair.

Reality: The premise is that because hair is constructed from protein, we need to rub protein or amino acids (the building blocks that make proteins) on our hair to 'rebuild' or 'feed' it. Protein cannot penetrate your hair. Clinging in a very thin film to your hair, it only serves as a light conditioner.

This means that the protein molecules deposit themselves along the length of the hair and form a temporary protective film around it. Proteins that are included in shampoos do not bind effectively to the cuticle and just get washed away as soon as you rinse out the shampoo.

There is a reduction in your hair tangling while the shampoo is actually in your hair, which might help if you have long hair and you pile it onto the top of your head while you scrub away building up a big lather.

Hype: An "advanced formula" to hydrate dry, lifeless hair.

Reality: The fact is most women's hair is dry because the shampoo they use and the way they use it is lifting all the oil out of the core of their hair. One technique to experiment with is to try using less shampoo, less often.

Most women do not need to wash their hair to the ends - unless your hair fell into your plate at lunchtime - merely the hair closest to their scalp. If you have dry or damaged hair, these "advanced formula" shampoos will not give you any benefit. None. They will not solve your problem in the slightest.

By shampooing only where and when you need it, your hair is able to hold onto it's natural oil and preserve its moisture levels more effectively.

Regular conditioning can also improve the feel of dry hair. Any normal conditioner - even a bargain one - left on your hair for about 5 to 10 minutes will do much more for you than any advanced formula shampoo.

Hype: Plant and vegetable extracts to improve your hair in any way.

Reality: There are plant extracts that do have medical benefits, but generally you have to apply them to your skin or eat them. In a shampoo or conditioner they are washed away and they will have very little chance to do their magic. Shampoo companies know this, so they include the legal minimum amount in their formula that still allows them to brag about it on the label.

Plant extracts don't tend to cling very well to the hair cuticle so they don't even stay on your hair very long if they do manage to survive washing and styling, plus many are unstable when exposed to li fashion coats ght so they break down and stop working.

There are fancy hair care products on the market that make a big show of how they use lots of "botanicals" in their formulas. The plain truth is that these added ingredients are not improving your hair in the slightest.

Hype: Vitamins increasing thickness, strength and shine.

Reality: Your hair, once it leaves the follicle in your scalp, is dead material. No amount of vitamins in a shampoo or conditioner or styling gel is going to do the slightest bit of good.

Panthenol and biotin, which are B vitamins, provide a conditioning benefit that is similar to how proteins coat the hair. But there is absolutely no nutritional benefit to vitamins in your hair styling products. Again, companies include these ingredients in the smallest legally allowed quantities that still let them promote their presence on the packaging.

Vitamin E oil also makes its appearance on shampoo and conditioner labels from time to time. While Vitamin E can benefit your skin by being applied directly to your skin, it cannot work at all when included in a hair care product, certainly not in the volume present in a shampoo or conditioner. Vitamin E also cannot help change how your follicles grow hair, whether you are rubbing it on your skin or eating it.

Hype: UV Protection to prevent sun damage.

Reality: Yes, the sun fades and can cause damage to the structure of your hair. Unfortunately the sun block put into shampoos and styling products offer little to no protection because, like most other additives, these ingredients do not bond well to the cuticle and just fall or wash out of your hair.

If you have curly or very long hair, the best way to protect your hair from intense sun (so this is really only if you are a tennis player, spend a lot of time on sunbeds, or live in a very sunny place) is to wear a hat. The next best alternative is to wear your hair up in a chignon, pleat or twist style so that the ends of your hair are protected.

Hype: Clarifying shampoos to deep clean your hair.

Reality: A clarifying shampoo is one that just cleans your hair and hasn't been mucked up with silicone, plant extracts, exotic proteins, waxes or any other useless additive that probably doesn't need to be in there anyway.

In theory, you need to switch between your clarifying shampoo and your shine-enhancing, moisturising, volume-boosting one to get the best out of your hair. The crazy thing, of course, is that if you just use a normal value priced shampoo in a very dilute form very occasionally in the first place, you don't need to be clarified. It's a genius way to get you to buy two bottles of shampoo to keep in your shower rather than just the one.

How to Have Truly Healthy Hair

It is easy to hope that some scientist somewhere has made a discovery that will cut short your recovery process. If only there was a shampoo you could wash in, wash out and have beautiful hair as a result!

The hair care industry continually works to uncover new ingredients that they can incorporate into their products that might convince you that at last there is a solution to your hair problem.

The best strategy for improving the health and manageability of your hair is to work hard to protect it from damage. Once the damage is done, the only cure is to have a haircut and start again, taking better care of your hair this time as you grow it out.

Soaring Commodities make conservation attractive, witness, the box beam.

New styles in building and soaring prices of material are bring new trends to building. Prices are through the roof on stone, steel, wood and every other component you can imagine. Everywhere you see the conservation. Doing a slatted porch as opposed to a full wrap, concrete flooring stained for appearance, smaller closets with intelligent storage systems for clothes to give the appearance of a bigger closet, etc?€?

For example, instead of doing full stone on a wall, it is now popular to do stone accents, to capture the look while saving money on expensive stone. Done right, one can enjoy the luxury of stone finishes with all the benefits, while saving on the material that goes into a full stone exterior.

There are plenty of styles en vogue that while not necessarily cheaper, are green in nature. Reclaimed lumber, antique refinished hinges and fixtures, skylight lighting, double coat full attic insulation to save on heating and cooling, etc...

Another trend we have seen is in the commercial sector. While metal stud is the frame of choice for a commercial builder, the price of steel has gone up. For example, the price of hot rolled steel coil has gone from $602 per ton as of September 2007 to $1073 per ton in June 2008. This dramatic increase has made many commercial builders look at wood as an alternative, where feasible.

As the trend continues, more and more specialty companies will evolve. When the price of materials is up and the cost of labor is down, we will see more labor intensive products taking the place of more materials. Think more recycled products. There will be more money in the junk and salvage business. Perhaps instead of eating on wooden table we will one day be eating on elaborately decorated converted car hoods, f women's coats ashioned into any shape? What will be the next great product?

A fairly new product to make waves is the Box Beam. In years past, the technology was limited to installing beams in already existing houses, due to the engineering restraints. The box beams were significantly more expensive since the wood was cheap relative to the cost of labor. With an increase in the price of the materials and a flat wage scale, the savings in material has evened the cost out.

Capuzzo Construction recently launched woodland box beam, a company dealing in wood box beams for custom homes. As a framing company, they knew builders were trying to use less material and thus less man hours in building. However, if the house had been engineered for big, heavy decorative beams, then the load bearing calculations forced the engineers to figure more material into a plan.

A lightweight solution, costing around the same as a solid beam with many advantages, box beams came into popularity. Now engineers could design for a lighter weight frame. The box beam is a green product, and save a significant amount of wood. While conventional beams have a tendency toward twisting, splitting and warping, a box beam will have none of those problems. Without a great mass of wood to absorb and retain moisture, there are not rot problems.

Since they are hollow, innovative approaches may be taken. Wiring and conduit can easily be run through a box beam. They may be used to house a chandelier and it?€?s wiring, or sprinkler systems added aftermarket. They can be detailed with interior track lighting. The options are limitless, and they give you freedom to make choices and changes. After all, the less tied down and locked in we are as builders and renovators, the better a product we can turn out.

While beams can be ordered pre-made in polyurethane, the appearance is never as good as an actual wood box beam. The key to conservation building is to use less without it ever showing. If the home has all the appearance and grandeur of a 3 million dollar home, but it has the price tag of a 2.5 million dollar home, then it will be an easy sell.

Looking around the construction of new and custom homes, we see all these trends toward the conservation of material. Does this take away from the aesthetic appeal or quality of a home? While opinions will differ, it is this author?€?s humble opinion that being able to make more with less is part of the craft and art of construction. A master artisan will thrive with limitations like these, where a hack will flounder.

How to Keep Your Car Battery Like New

You'll not get caught with women's jackets your charge down if you give your car battery reasonable care.

You slide under the wheel of the car one frosty winter morning, turn the key in the lock, and start to push down the accelerator to race the engine a little. Only the engine doesn't race; in fact it doesn't even walk.

"Oh, no, stuck with a dead battery!" you groan.

This won't happen to you if you consider the car's electrical system merely an extension of the house's power system, and give it the same type of attention and preventive maintenance.

Why does a car battery hold up perfectly well during the summer and poop out in the winter, just when you need it most? This can happen for two different reasons.

1) the oil in the crank case is stiffer in cold weather than in warm, and the starting motor has a harder job ploughing through it.

2) The output or effectiveness of a storage battery falls off markedly as the temperature drops. In other words, when the engine needs the most starting energy, the battery is least capable of providing it!

There is a simple solution to this nuisance: check the battery frequently with the arrival of cold weather, and give it an overnight charge with a charger occasionally to keep it to full strength. The more frequently you stop and start the engine, and the less you use the car in the winter, the less chance does the battery have to accumulate a good charge from the charging generator, which works only when the engine runs.

A test on a storage battery with a voltmeter doesn't mean very much. A three-cell battery can read pretty close to its maximum of 6.6 volts, and a six-cell battery to 13.2 volts, and still make very little impression on a current-hungry starting motor. Did you know that a three-cell battery has to deliver between 200 and 300 amperes to kick over a modern high-compression engine?

The only reliable test is made with a hydrometer. This is a syringe-like glass gadget with a squeeze bulb at one end; inside the glass is a shot-weighted float. To use it, you merely unscrew each cap of the battery in turn and suck up about half a syringeful of acid. The weight of the acid compared to that of water (its "specific gravity") is a direct indication of the state of charge.

The float is calibrated to show this specific gravity. Theoretical full charge is 1.3, or "1300," although with anything but a brand new battery a reading between 1200 and 1250 or 1275 is very good. When the reading falls below 1200 the battery needs a little shot in the arm.

A battery charger is a source of low-voltage direct current. It consists usually of a step-down transformer that reduces the 115-volt AC line to about 7 or 15 volts (for three- and six-cell batteries, respectively) after passing it through a rectifier that changes the AC to DC. Dual-voltage chargers are now common, to accommodate both types of batteries.

To do an overnight boosting job, a charger for three-cell automobile batteries should produce not less than about 5 amperes, although 10 is even better; for six-cell batteries, ratings of about 3 to 6 amperes are adequate. Always disconnect a charger before starting the engine.

Car vibration can loosen battery leads and sometimes make them jump off; inspect, clean, tighten. Several times a year, remove the connector lugs from battery and clean terminals with sandpaper.

Wipe battery often with cloth dampened with water; check center caps of the battery for fit. To minimize corrosion around terminals, caused by sulphuric acid vapor from cells, coat with Vaseline.

With these few simple techniques, you need never put up with a dead battery again.

Showing Your Horse to Clients

When you have horses for sale you will inevitably have clients out to see your horse in person. If you have not had much experience in buying and selling horses, it is hard to know how best to present your horse to bring out his best characteristics for the clients.

The first thing to keep in mind is that first impressions can may or break a sale. Take a look at your barn. Is it clean and presentable? Are the stalls cleaned out, the aisle raked or swept, and the paddocks well fenced and clear of dangerous obstacles? If not you may need to upgrade your barn. From some facilities this can be a simple clean-up job. Other places are a lost cause and need lots of time and money to make them presentable. If this is the case you might want to look into boarding your sales horse at a local stable that has a good standard of care.

Assuming that your facility is in good shape you next need to consider your horse. While you can't help it if your horse is shaggy in the winter, but whether sleek coated or extra hairy your horse should be groomed to a shine. If he is especially dusty but it is too cold for a bath you can hot towel the coat rubbing out the worst of the dirt. Excess hairs should be trimmed so that they are tidy. If your horse has white markings they should be scrubbed so that any stains are taken out. If the weather is nice the best idea is to give your horse a thorough bath to show him off the best.

Depending on your horse's breed and discipline, you should ensure that your horse looks well suited to his job. If your horse is a show prospect he should look as though he could go to a show tomorrow. If he is a pleasure horse he should be clean and well trimmed, but he should not look as though he is ring-ready. Know your horse's discipline and groom accordingly.

If your horse is a baby or cannot be ridden, make sure there is a free arena or paddock that the buyers can watch your horse move freely in. If your horse is started under saddle be sure to have a sa women's coats online fe, fenced area in which the buyer can try the horse. Any tack, equipment, halters and brushes should be clean and in good repair. Make sure that there is someone who can ride your horse for the client before they try him as they will want to see him go under saddle.

For horses who are experienced in the ring or who have accomplishments under their belts it is a good idea to have an album of photographs or a video available to show the buyers when they arrive. For homebreds it is a good idea to have photos of the sire and dam if they are not available to be seen on property.

When the buyers arrive your horse should be in its stall, well groomed and ready to show. Your tack should be near at hand so you don't need to waste time trying to find it. Most buyers will want to see the horse without tack first, then under saddle. If your horse is hot and needs to be longed or ridden before the buyer arrives, spend time well in advance preparing him, then bring him back into the barn to meet the clients. Be honest with them about your preparation of the horse, to do otherwise is dishonest and could lead to disaster if the client buys the horse and becomes injured because they did not know what the horse was really like.

Take your time with the clients, but be aware that they may have other place to go and be on a time limit. If they are interested go ahead and show them your other horses, but many buyers are focused on the horse they are looking at and have no desire to see the rest of the farm.

By presenting your farm and your horse at their best you increase the chance that the buyer will not only want to purchase your horse, but that they will be willing to pay the price you are asking. A poorly groomed horse at an unkempt facility only makes buyers want to dicker with the price and may completely turn them off before they even truly look at the horse. Taking good care of your horse and your clients will give you the best chance for a successful sale.

How to Save Money When Buying Clothes

With the cost of gas, food and mortgages rising every day many are looking for ways to save money. Fortunately, you can still save money when you purchase clothes for your family. There are some easy ways to save money when you buy clothes.

Make a List Before Shopping. When you go clothes shopping without a list, a store tempts you with its attractive displays and the latest styles. All of a sudden, you are drawn to buy things you might not have considered otherwise. However if you have an exact list of what you need for each family member it is much harder for you to be tempted. You'll find that with your list in your hand you can take the store by storm, looking easily for these exact items. When the store does not have the items at the price you want: you can choose to shop somewhere else.

Do Comparison Shopping Online First. Many retail stores have online stores where you can see a majority of their inventory. Visit these online stores to see if they have what you want. This will give you a good sense of their prices and exactly what type of merchandise they do carry. The store may not have all of its merchandise listed on the website; this is still an excellent opportunity for you to see a great deal of what they do have at their in-store locations. Some comparison-shopping can save you a great deal of time.

Locate Coupons to Save Money. Many stores now offer coupons to help draw in the shoppers to come to their stores. Some may wonder why a store would offer a coupon, often these store women's jackets s think that shoppers will simply spend exactly what they originally budgeted and will at times spend even more for splurge items that are listed at sale prices! A sale can be very tempting to customers if they are not thinking logically. Being organized and practical though, a sale is an ideal opportunity for a family to save a great deal of money. Many families shop regular sales to save money on things that they were hoping to find even at regular price.

Remember to Look for What you Need, not What you Want. Some shoppers are so easily tempted; they will often buy what they want and not just what they need. When you buy what you need, your budget and finances stay under control. Your family then saves money on clothing and other items you may need. When you start to look for items that you want, simply for the sake of wanting them, this is a true danger zone.

An example of this is that you need a good winter coat to stay warm but you want one with real fur around the collar. You truly do not need the real fur around the collar; it has no practical use in keeping you warm and is just a way to look attractive. Looking at other coats will most likely be less expensive. Start by looking for what you need and not what you want.

Shoppers can save money on clothes by being sensible and practical. Thinking ahead of time always is the best rule of thumb. Even if you need to make an immediate purchase, you can still get a great bargain saving money on clothes. Remember that the store is not in control of your wallet: you are!

Roots of the Plus Size Designer Industry

So where did the modern day size design industry we know today come from? Everybody knows about the meteoric rise of MODE magazine and their heart breaking tragic fall from grace, and I would wager that everyone has heard of the plus size agencies of Ford 12+, Curves, and Wilhelmina 10/20, but that doesn't really answer the basic question. In my mind, for there to be a plus size modeling industry there first had to be something for them to show off on the runway; it's a classic chicken and egg situation. Without something to show off to consumers, like plus size clothes, plus size shoes, plus size jewelry, or plus size maternity wear, there's really no need for plus size models. That's where plus size designers come in, and that's where we go back to the beginning, to a name that we're all familiar with: Lane Bryant.

It is widely accepted that Lane Bryant was the first large-scale manufacturer of womens' plus size clothing, the first to lobby for plus size designers, and the first to use plus size models in their advertising. women's jackets But where did they originate from? Obviously, they haven't 'always been around' like some people would lead you to believe. Rather, it all began back in the early 1900's with a woman by the name of Lena Himmelstein Bryant Malsin.

Contrary to what some people believe, Lena didn't actually start out in the plus size market segment. Rather, she started her business sewing maternity clothes in a tiny shop on 5th Avenue in New York. From a small cash infusion of $300 (the equivalent to $7300 in today's money), Lena started sewing clothes and marketing them to women from all different parts of society. Due to an error on her paperwork opening her bank account, she was listed as Lane instead of Lena, and it was easier to go with it than try and change it back. Lane Bryant was born.

In 1909 Lena was wed to Albert Malsin, and he became very involved in the business. He brought with him the eye of an engineer and that of an accountant, and really helped to streamline their clothing production. This kept prices under control and allowed them to produce clothes from patterns at a high rate of speed. They were the original plus size design team. Unfortunately, pregnancy was somewhat of a hush-hush subject 95 years ago, and they ran into many difficulties advertising their designer clothes to the masses. Eventually, they were able to get an advertisement run in a local newspaper, and they were soon up to the ears in customers. Lena soon made the realization that a large portion, if not the majority, of her customers were what she referred to as "stout-figured" women. She began to tailor her lines for that customer base, and it quickly became the flagship source of revenue for the company.

A little known fact is that Lena was one of the early pioneers of the mail order catalog as well. Due to the pressures from social groups that she faced, advertising was a very difficult task. She resolved to get her designer clothes in front of her customers somehow, and had a catalog printed that she would mail out. Soon, the plus size designer content in the catalog had overtaken the maternity content, and the course of the company was set.

How Counseling Can Help a Victim of Domestic Abuse-From Huntley and Elgin, IL

Domestic abuse is all too common in the world. In almost 20 percent of all marriages in the United States, couples push, shove, punch, pull, hit, or otherwise assault each other.

Emotional abuse, threats, intimidation, humiliation, insults or degrading remarks and controlling, dominating behavior is common. The good news, however is that help is available through psychological and family counseling.

Younger couples are most prone to abuse and violence, and, without intervention, it often escalates in intensity or frequency. Shoving or pushing is the way most violence begins in young marriages.

Spouses frequently ignore early abusive events and rationalize that once the current problems are over, the abuse will end. In spite of the tendency to rationalize away these incidents, its important to remember that even minor acts of violence often escalate over time. This increases the risk of injury and physical harm.

There are various forms of abuse and marital violence. Frequently, a husbands controlling behavior is the wifes first sign that she may be in an abusive relationship. Controlling behavior is often a crucial red flag.

The husband may try to prevent her from visiting or talking to fr women's jackets online iends or family. He may try to make her feel guilty or afraid if she chooses to engage in separate personal activities or spend time with friends.

Increasing social isolation combined with the infliction of verbal or physical assaults can strengthen intimidation and control. Under these conditions, over time, a woman often feels like a prisoner in her own home.

Abuse takes different forms in relationships. When angry, the husband and wife will often slap or shove each other or call each other insulting names. Often, they are more concerned about their egos, winning rather than losing or not losing face than the abuse itself. Also, most importantly, neither spouse views themselves as being the victim of an abusive relationship.

However, even intimidation and humiliation that is not part of the typical controlling or frightening relationship causes horrendous problems. They can destroy the relationship, lead to legal problems, physical and emotional injuries and have long-term devastating effects on the helpless children who have to witness it. Counseling and psychotherapy can provide valuable help in situations like this.

How can I get help if I am in an abusive relationship?

Remember, domestic violence is a crime; therefore, one important way to get help is to call the police. Your first response must be to protect yourself and your children. The police must be your first line of defense where your physical safety is concerned.

If not in immediate danger, you can also call your local United Way, battered womens shelter, community crisis line or community family services agency. They will let you know which services are available to you and how to access them.

Most communities have spousal support services and and an available battered womens shelter where you and your children can stay. If the violence has not escalated to the point that you fear for your safety, but you recognize that your arguments are not healthy and want to prevent them from destroying your marriage, there are additional options available to you.

Chances are that your community has anger management programs that can be found through your local United Way or community mental health agencies. These programs focus on teaching you the skills to resolve conflict and to handle anger constructively. Support groups found through the same resources can also help you maintain a commitment to living in a nonviolent household.

You may also need to participate in marital therapy. Marital therapists implement expert treatment plans to teach strategies for resolving conflict appropriately. When looking for a therapist, tell him or her about the violence in your relationship and ask about the type of experience and training he has in working with such cases.

Through marital treatment provided by a professional counselor or psychologist, you will be given the tools to eliminate abuse, constructively resolve conflict and improve your relationship. Also, if you decide to leave your relationship, a therapist can help you and your children cope effectively with the resulting changes and trauma. The psychologist or therapist can help you develop your strengths and improve your coping skills.

What to do if a Relative or Friend is in a Violent Relationship

If someone you care about is the victim of a violent relationship, be sure to let them know you care for their well-being, regardless of whether they stay or leave their spouse. Women often stay in violent relationships because of the mistaken assumption that they cannot make it without their partners.

Battered women often feel isolated because they are embarrassed and have no one to talk to with about the abuse. If you notice any injuries, depression or anxiety gently inquire about what is happening and listen with compassion and without judgment. If your friend decides to go for help, make her aware of the resources for battered women in your community and accompany her if necessary.

Old English Dog Breed Profile Information

The Old English Sheepdog is a big dog, with a height of 20-24 inches and weigh over 60 pounds, with some weighing up to 100 pounds. They have a shaggy coat, which is thicker around the hind legs, with a waterproof, almost downy, underside. Their head hair often covers, or shields, their eyes, like a natural pair of sunglasses. They are grey to blue in colour mixed with copious amounts of white, they can also be brown but this is not the norm. They are a strong dog, with great stamina, and their general muscle shows that. Some have docked tails but the ones that don't have a feathered abundant look to them. The main body is quite short, wide, and muscular. They have the look of a dog you could instantly fall in love with.

History. As its name suggests the Old English Sheepdog was originally bred in the 18th century as a sheep herding dog that could also protect the flock from predator attacks, most commonly fox's. The shepherds used to have the tails docked to prevent entanglement, stop any predator from being able to attach, and general cleanliness. Some puppies of the breed are actually born with no, or very short, tails, which also encouraged the docking of the ones that had tails. It was also common for farmers to sheer the dog along with the sheep and use their copious hair for making, blankets, clothing, cushions, and similar items. Fame came to this breed in the 1980s when a company used one in their advertising campaign thereby earning the nickname Dulux dog.

Temperament. The Old English sheepdog has a temperament that is somewhat typical of many sheep dogs. It is sociable, friendly, playful, intelligent, faithful and protective, to name but a few of its character traits. They love being with the family and play well with children. Care should be taken when playing, as they do get fully involved and may get a hint over zealous. Given their size, weight and strength, it is a good idea to supervise fashion coats online play when small children are involved. Should the dog happen to injure a member of the family it would be very unhappy, so it is only fair on both the family and the dog to ensure a safe playtime. One thing to be aware of is, as they were bred originally as herding dogs and their instincts run deep, there is a possibility they will try to round up the children. If nothing else it would be fun to watch.

Health issues. Generally, the Old English Sheepdog do not have any serious genetic problems; they have the common thoroughbred issue of hip displasia. Their minor problems are. Cataracts and Entropion. Entropian is when the eyelid curls into the eye; this can of course cause severe irritation to the eye, and needs to be rectified by a vet.

Grooming. Are you ready for this? Only joking. Apart from needing better, and slightly different, tools, the grooming of the Old English Sheepdog is quite similar to other dogs. They need to be groomed 1-3 times a week, starting with a comb like tool; either a dematting comb or a rake (a dog grooming rake, not a garden rake). Once the dogs' hair is unmated and knots removed then a normal brushing will suffice, as a rule of thumb. Cutting the hair is probably going to mean a trip to the salon, as it is nearly as bad as shearing sheep.

Living conditions. Although the Old English Sheepdog breed has a thick luxurious coat, they can not be kept outdoors in cold climates. They enjoy the normal warm home, and bed, as do we all. Some care should be given though as you do not want to cover them to get too hot, although they should throw off items if too warm.

How To Create Surface Textures With Concrete

There are many standard surface textures for concrete and there are a lot more you can "invent". To get an idea of why such possibilities exist it would be helpful to take a look at a cross section of a concrete slab. Correctly poured, spread and finished, the cross section would reveal an almost uniform pattern. The larger stones in the mix would be surrounded by smaller stones and spaces between w fashion coats ould be filled with the finest aggregates (sand). Each piece of aggregate would be encased in cement which bonds to itself and bonds aggregate to aggregate.

Working with a wood float is a finish in itself or it can be just a step in preparing the surface for a slick finish accomplished with a steel trowel. The wood float finish leaves a rough, slip-free surface which is practical for many purposes, especially on walks and paths where traction is an important consideration. The steel trowel finish can be made almost as slick as linoleum and this is good for interior slabs that will be overlaid with tiles or which will be used as is - for a recreation room that will be used for dancing, for example.

When you have an idea for a particular texture, construct a small test slab to see if the results match your expectations. The test slab does not have to be large; stepping-stone size will do. The important thing is that you carefully note the contents (proportions) of the mix, amount of spreading and tamping, time lapse between striking (if any) and the finishing touches. Go through this procedure even if you have to make three or four test slabs. They can always be used as stepping stones.

Striated Surfaces

Striations can take the form of straight, zigzag or wavy lines and are usually used to add some interest to a nonskid textured surface. A long handled broom can be used for the purpose or a small hand brush. Stiff bristles will produce a coarse texture while soft bristles result in a fine texture.

You can finish with a broom or brush over a floated surface or a troweled one. The float-broom finish will always be coarser than the trowel-broom finish. Straight lines are done by resting the broom on one edge of the pour and then pulling toward you. Each time you do as much as the width of the broom. You can jiggle the broom as you pull it or move it in such a manner that you create a wavy effect.

Travertine Effect

This is a very intriguing texture which involves an extra operation after the surface of the concrete has been broomed. The brooming is to insure a good bond when for an additional mortar coat.

To make the mortar coat, use a sack of white Portland cement with 2 cu. ft. of sand. Add about 1/4 1b. of color pigment and mix thoroughly. Any mineral oxide color can be used, but yellow is extremely effective. Add enough water so that the mix will pour like heavy paint.

The coating is thrown on the slab with a brush. The best method is to pick up a good quantity and apply it to the slab by snapping the brush. A quick flick of the wrist does it - a snap that causes the mix to leave the brush and strike the slab smartly. The idea is to make an uneven surface with depressions and ridges that are from 1/4 to 1/2 in. high.

Allow the coat to harden until you can rest a board across it for working and use a steel trowel to flatten the ridges. The result is a kind of three-dimensional texture that is smooth in some areas and coarse-grained in the depressions. You can vary the results by the amount of final troweling you do and/or the amount of finish mortar applied. The final effect is most pleasing if the slab is then scored in a uniform or random geometrical pattern before the concrete cures.

This is just a small sample of the surface textures you can create with concrete.
